London witnessed a tragic incident during an Ironman event held in Youghal, southwest Ireland, where two participants lost their lives during the swimming portion. The Cork County Council expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate incident. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the event was postponed due to severe weather conditions.

As reported by Irish broadcaster RTE, the two men, aged in their mid-60s and mid-40s, passed away in separate incidents during the 1.9 kilometer (1.2 mile) swimming part of the competition. Ironman Ireland, the organizing body, acknowledged the situation on Facebook, stating that immediate medical attention was provided by safety personnel upon recognizing the athletes in distress.

The organizers extended their heartfelt sympathies to the families and friends of the deceased athletes, promising ongoing support during this difficult time. They also expressed gratitude towards the safety personnel and first responders who promptly came to the athletes’ aid.

Local media confirmed that both men were declared dead at the scene. They had been participating in a half Ironman event, which included a 90 kilometer (56 mile) bike course and a 21.1 kilometer (13.1 mile) run.
