Tragic Incident: Toddler Fatally Affected by Suspected Opioid Exposure at New York Day Care

  • A 1-year-old died after opioid exposure at a Bronx day care, according to the NYPD.
  • Three other children were also hospitalized in relation to the incident, as per the police.
  • Investigators discovered a kilo press inside the day care.

Police are currently investigating the death of a 1-year-old child at a New York City day care center, which is believed to be caused by opioid exposure.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams reported during a press conference that one child had died and three others were hospitalized as a result of possible contact with opioid drugs.

According to an NYPD spokesperson, the police were called to a residence on Morris Avenue in the Bronx after a 911 call on Friday. Inside the building, they discovered an unconscious and unresponsive 1-year-old boy, a 2-year-old boy, and an 8-month-old girl, as stated in an NYPD statement.

Chief Detective Joe Kenny mentioned during the press conference that all three children exhibited signs of opioid exposure when they were found. Narcan was administered to all three kids by the police.

Police later confirmed that the 1-year-old boy, identified as Nicholas Dominici, was pronounced dead at Montefiore Medical Center. The 2-year-old boy is in critical condition, while the 8-month-old girl and another 2-year-old boy, who was independently taken to BronxCare Health System, are stable, according to the police.

When raiding the day care, officers discovered a “kilo press,” a tool commonly used for packaging large quantities of drugs, according to Kenny. The day care was licensed and had been last inspected by the New York Department of Health and Hygiene on September 9, with no violations found by investigators.

The NYPD is actively investigating the situation but has not made any arrests at this time.
