Tragic Incident in Texas Corn Field: Three Lives Lost in Attempt to Rescue Dog from Cistern

In a tragic incident, three individuals and a dog were discovered deceased inside a cistern located in a Texas corn field. The victims were identified as Delvys Garcia (37), Denise Martinez (26), and Noel Vigil-Benitez (45), who were out on a hunting trip with another person when their dog accidentally fell into the cistern. One of the group went down into the cistern to save the dog, and the other two followed suit in an attempt to rescue their companion. The fourth individual promptly went to his truck to call 911 for assistance.

Authorities arrived at the scene at around 1 a.m. and found the cistern partially filled with water. The water level was significantly below the small opening of the cistern, indicating that the victims were likely submerged. The cistern emitted strong fumes comparable to those of a septic tank. Unfortunately, there were no signs of life from the dog and the three individuals upon the arrival of the first responders.

Recovery operations faced difficulties due to the presence of hydrogen sulfide gas and stagnant water within the cistern. Hydrogen sulfide gas can lead to various health issues such as eye and respiratory irritations, apnea, coma, convulsions, dizziness, headaches, weakness, irritability, insomnia, and stomach upset, as stated by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. First responders mitigated the gas by ventilating the cistern and eliminating the water.

The unstable nature of the cistern posed another challenge during the recovery efforts. Digging near the structure was initially attempted but ultimately abandoned due to concerns over compromising the cistern’s stability. Instead, a small drone was utilized to assess the integrity of the cistern.

Eventually, a member of the Bastrop County Sheriff’s Office was lowered into the cistern to retrieve the bodies on Wednesday night. The deceased individuals, who hailed from Florida, along with the dog, were transported to the medical examiner’s office by a local funeral home for further investigation through an autopsy.
