Tragic Farmingdale School Bus Crash in Wawayanda, NY: NTSB Launches Investigation

WAWAYANDA, Orange County (WABC) — Authorities are investigating whether a blown front tire caused a tragic bus accident in New York. The charter bus, transporting students from Farmingdale High School in Nassau County, was en route to band camp in Greeley, Pennsylvania. The incident occurred on I-84 in Wawayanda, Orange County. Sadly, two adults lost their lives in the crash while many others sustained injuries.

At the time of the accident, there were 40 students and four adults on board the bus. The deceased individuals have been identified as Gina Pellettiere, the 43-year-old band director, and Beatrice Ferarri, a retired 77-year-old social studies teacher.

Thirteen people remain hospitalized, with eight in serious condition at Westchester Medical Center and five at Garnett Health Medical Center. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will be conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the crash, focusing on factors such as the vehicle, motor carrier, and emergency response.

After the accident, Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences and stated that the bus rolled 50 feet down the embankment. The injured victims were transported to various hospitals in the area, and those who did not require hospitalization were reunited with their parents at a community building.

The bus involved in the crash was owned by Regency Transportation, and it was one of six buses in the caravan. The other students from Farmingdale High School were provided counseling and returned safely to Long Island.

This tragic incident has deeply affected the students and faculty at Farmingdale High School. Officials urge parents to hold their children close, highlighting the importance of cherishing every moment with loved ones.
