Former Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul has tragically passed away at the age of 31, as confirmed by Skate Canada.
Paul represented Canada in the 2014 Olympic Winter Games, and her life was cut short in a devastating seven-vehicle collision in Melancthon Township, Ontario.
The collision occurred when a transport truck entered a construction zone on Country Road 124 and crashed into a line of stopped cars, one of which Paul and her infant son Charlie were in.
Tragically, Paul did not survive the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her baby son was taken to the hospital to receive treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.
Skate Canada, the governing body for figure skating in Canada, described Paul as a shining star both on and off the ice.
“Alexandra’s dedication, passion, and remarkable talents have left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating,” stated Skate Canada in a heartfelt tribute.
“As we remember Alexandra’s contributions to the sport, we also reflect on the camaraderie and sportsmanship she exemplified. She was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model, demonstrating the values of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanlike conduct.”
Alongside her husband Mitchell Islam, Paul achieved success as a pairs figure skater. Together, they won three Canadian Championship medals and competed in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, finishing in 18th place.
Paul retired from competitive figure skating in 2016.
In 2019, Paul joined the Ontario-based firm Barriston Law as an articling student and later became an associate lawyer.
Paul and Islam welcomed their first child last year.
