Traffic on Twitter drastically declines following Elon Musk’s acquisition and the introduction of Threads feature

Since billionaire Elon Musk took over Twitter, the platform has experienced a significant decline in traffic, with many users shifting to alternative platforms such as Meta’s Threads. Matthew Prince, CEO of internet services company Cloudflare, shared a chart on Twitter showing the decline of the platform since the beginning of 2023. This decline coincides with the official launch of Meta’s Threads, which is seen as a new competitor to Twitter.

According to Cloudflare’s list of top 100 domains, Twitter is currently ranked 37th. This can be attributed to the unpopular changes implemented by Musk in recent months and the emergence of alternative platforms like Threads.

One of the changes that drew criticism from Twitter users was the introduction of a rate limit on the number of posts that different account tiers were allowed to read each day. This limit was set at 6,000 daily posts for Twitter Blue subscribers and 600 posts for non-subscribers.

Under Musk’s leadership, Twitter has also implemented a different version of Twitter Blue, which requires users to pay a monthly subscription fee to receive a verification check. Additionally, Musk has rolled back moderation rules and reinstated previously suspended accounts, including that of former President Trump.

Meanwhile, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that Threads has reached 100 million sign-ups. Within just a few hours of its availability, Threads saw 30 million downloads and reached 70 million sign-ups by Friday. Zuckerberg expressed his surprise and excitement about the rapid growth of the platform.

In conclusion, Twitter’s traffic has declined since Elon Musk’s takeover, leading users to explore alternative platforms like Meta’s Threads. The launch of Threads and the changes implemented by Musk have contributed to this decline. On the other hand, Threads has experienced significant growth and surpassed 100 million sign-ups in a short period of time.
