Toyota’s US Design Studio Explores Future with Innovative Baby Lunar Cruiser

Toyota’s CALTY Design Research studio celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, having played a crucial role in the creation of iconic vehicles such as the 1978 Toyota Celica and the future 2024 Toyota Tacoma. To mark this milestone, the studio has unveiled the futuristic Baby Lunar Cruiser concept.

The CALTY Design Research studio first opened its doors in El Segundo, California, in 1973. It later relocated to Newport Beach where it developed the design for the second-generation Celica. The studio quickly found its niche and began producing designs for various production vehicles, including the 1995 Tacoma, Avalon, Prius, Highlander and RAV4, as well as the Camry NASCAR in 2013, 2015, and 2018. It also continued to create unique concepts, such as the Scion NYC.

Toyota is currently collaborating with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to develop a pressurized rover called the Lunar Cruiser. This collaboration has inspired the CALTY team to create the Baby Lunar Cruiser concept. The concept combines the futuristic capabilities of an interplanetary exploration vehicle with the rugged design language of the original FJ40 Land Cruiser 4×4. The Baby Lunar Cruiser is equipped with dual joysticks for control and in-wheel motors for propulsion.
