Following the sharing of the footage by Italy’s culture minister on Twitter, the police took five days to locate Dimitrov in England.
Dimitrov may face fines of up to $16,000 and a prison sentence of five years, as reported by the Italian news agency ANSA.
In a letter of apology addressed to Rome’s mayor and the prosecutor’s office, Dimitrov expressed deep remorse and acknowledged his lack of knowledge about the monument’s historical significance.
His lawyer described Dimitrov as an ignorant foreigner who believed he could get away with such acts in Italy, unlike in his own country.
