Tory Lanez Transferred from LA Jail to State Prison: Exclusive Update on the Rapper’s Legal Situation

Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been relocated to a state prison in Kern County, California, as part of his 10-year sentence for shooting Houston rapper Megan Thee Stallion.

Lanez was transferred from a Los Angeles jail to the North Kern State Prison in Delano, California, approximately 140 miles north of L.A., according to The Messenger. He is expected to spend three to six months there before being transferred to another facility.

Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, was charged by the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office with shooting Megan Thee Stallion in both of her feet after leaving a party in July 2020. Following a two-week trial in December, Lanez was found guilty by a jury on all three charges: assault with a semiautomatic firearm, having a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence. He faced a maximum sentence of 22 years and potential deportation to Canada.

The 31-year-old rapper, known for his song “Say It,” was denied a new trial in May and was sentenced to 10 years in prison in August. Bail was also denied earlier this month.

During the trial, Lanez attempted to use his celebrity status to launch a misogynistic campaign against Megan Thee Stallion, whose real name is Megan Pete. Men, predominantly Black men, in the music industry attacked her credibility and used the conflict in their lyrics or jokes.

At the trial, Megan addressed the harm this caused to her, and she also wrote an opinion piece for Elle.

“If I had known I would go through this agony, I wish he had just shot and killed me,” Megan said in court last year. “I have been portrayed as the villain. He is the villain.”

“As I look back on the past three years, I see myself as a survivor because I have truly survived the unimaginable,” she stated. “Not only did I survive being shot by someone I trusted and considered a close friend, but I also overcame the public humiliation of having my name and reputation smeared by that individual for the world to see.”

Lanez also released two statements after his sentencing — one in which he took “full responsibility” for the shooting and another in which he claimed he was “wrongfully convicted.”
