Tory Lanez, the shooter of Megan Thee Stallion, receives a 10-year prison sentence

Tory Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on Tuesday. In December, Lanez was found guilty of three felony charges for shooting and injuring rapper Megan Thee Stallion in 2020. The charges against him include assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of a loaded, unregistered firearm in a vehicle, and discharging a firearm with gross negligence.

Initially, prosecutors had requested a 13-year prison sentence for Lanez. However, his legal team has argued for probation and his release from jail to enter a residential substance abuse program. They also plan to appeal his conviction.

During the trial, Megan testified that Lanez fired the gun at her feet and demanded that she dance as she walked away from their SUV after leaving a party at Kylie Jenner’s home. The court received letters of support for Lanez, including one from his six-year-old son. Lanez’s father also spoke during the hearing, emotionally sharing how Lanez lost his mother at a young age.

Megan, on the other hand, detailed the emotional toll she has experienced since the shooting in a written statement delivered by the deputy district attorney. She expressed that she has not experienced peace since the incident and that she continues to heal but will never be the same. Megan testified during the trial but chose not to appear in person, stating that she could not bring herself to be in the same room as Lanez again.

Lanez has been in jail since his conviction in December. Judge David Herriford acknowledged that Megan was a vulnerable victim but did not consider Lanez to be especially cruel or callous in his actions.

Lanez’s legal team previously requested a new trial, arguing that certain evidence had been improperly admitted, including an Instagram post. They also contested Megan’s testimony about Lanez urging her not to go to the police and the DNA evidence linking him to the shooting.

In their sentencing memo, Lanez’s lawyers questioned the credibility of the evidence that led to his conviction and argued that his lack of remorse should not be factored into his sentencing. They requested probation for Lanez, along with entry into a residential substance abuse program upon his release from jail.

Tory Lanez began gaining popularity with his mixtapes in 2009 and went on to release major-label albums. Megan Thee Stallion, who was already a rising star at the time of the shooting, has seen her prominence soar since then. She won a Grammy for best new artist in 2021 and has achieved chart-topping success with hits like “Savage” featuring Beyoncé and “WAP” with Cardi B.
