Madrid’s mayor advised all residents to stay at home on September 3 as the capital prepared for heavy rain and storms affecting parts of Spain. The national weather agency, AEMET, issued a maximum red alert for Sunday in the Madrid region, Toledo province, and the city of Cadiz. AEMET predicted that up to 120 liters per square meter of rain could fall over 12 hours in Madrid. Due to the expected record-breaking rainfall, Madrid Mayor Jose Luis Martinez-Almeida urged people to stay at home.

Dark storm clouds loomed over Madrid during the early afternoon of Sunday, but many people were still outside. Some residents welcomed the red alert, with one saying it was a good idea to avoid using cars and suggested going home earlier to avoid the worst of the storm. Madrid’s emergency services sent text messages to residents warning them of flood risks and discouraging the use of vehicles.

LaLiga suspended an evening match between Atletico Madrid and Sevilla at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium in Madrid due to the weather alert. In Alcanar, Tarragona, on the east coast of Spain, residents were also confined to their homes due to flooding after heavy rainfall.
