Torrance Promises Increased Police Presence Following Del Amo Fashion Center Brawl

The Torrance Police Department is taking action to enhance safety and increase its presence in response to the recent brawl at Del Amo Fashion Center. Mayor George Chen and Police Chief Jay Hart have issued a joint statement urging residents to promptly report any suspicious activity.

“Ensuring public safety is our utmost priority. When visiting Torrance, the Torrance Police Department is committed to providing all community members with a safe and positive experience,” they stated together. “We stand in solidarity with our community partners and firmly oppose any individuals who seek to disrupt or violate the law in Torrance. The recent disturbance at Del Amo Fashion Center was swiftly addressed by a robust police response, restoring safety to the area and effectively implementing crowd control measures. As we enter the holiday season, there will be an increased police presence and patrols by the Torrance Police Department. We encourage the community to report any suspicious or criminal behavior they may encounter. If you witness something, please say something.”

The melee that took place on Sunday at Del Amo Fashion Center occurred around 4 p.m. According to estimations, up to 1,000 individuals, predominantly juveniles, were involved in a rolling brawl concentrated around an outdoor plaza near an AMC theater complex. The brawl coincided with National Cinema Day, which attracted large crowds by offering $4 tickets.

Given the magnitude of the brawl, the Torrance Police Department, together with law enforcement agencies from Gardena, El Segundo, Manhattan Beach, Los Angeles, and Los Angeles County, promptly responded to the scene. It is still unclear what sparked the violence, although reports of similar incidents involving teenagers at other movie theaters across the country also emerged on Sunday.

Witnesses confirmed that a firearm was discharged at Del Amo Fashion Center, but no victims could be located by the authorities. Police successfully cleared the mall by 9 p.m. on Sunday. Fortunately, no major injuries were reported, although videos on social media showed smaller groups engaged in fistfights and brawls, and at least one teenager being targeted and assaulted by a group until a bystander intervened.
