Tornado Near Chicago Airport Causes Disruption to Hundreds of Flights

A tornado touched down near Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport on Wednesday evening, causing passengers to seek shelter and disrupting hundreds of flights. There were no immediate reports of injuries. According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a confirmed tornado was on the ground around 7pm and was intermittently touching down while moving east. Additional circulations were also reported south of O’Hare. The weather service advised people in the warned area to seek shelter.

By 8pm, the weather service declared that the Chicago forecast area was “currently tornado warning free.” However, the storm was moving east toward Michigan, where tornado warnings were issued. Television stations showed footage of hundreds of people taking shelter in an O’Hare concourse. As a result of the tornado, 169 flights were canceled and nearly 500 were delayed.

Tornado sirens sounded multiple times across Chicago, alerting residents to take cover. Lynn Becker, a longtime Chicago resident, captured video of the sirens sounding out across the city’s iconic skyline. He expressed his limited options in a tall building and mentioned going into the core of the building for safety. Local news outlets reported that warehouses near O’Hare were damaged. The weather service also received reports of a roof being blown off in the community of Huntley in McHenry County and trees uprooted and roofs blown off in Cook County, where Chicago is located.
