Throughout much of 2023, automakers have experienced positive sales figures. However, our analysts at JATO Dynamics have uncovered a surprising fact: high-performance luxury vehicles are thriving in the US and Europe. Among these brands, BMW stands out.
Specifically, BMW’s high-performance division, BMW M, has seen impressive sales numbers. In Europe alone, over 19,600 BMW M models were sold in the first half of the year, marking a 58 percent increase compared to the same period last year. The success is not limited to Europe, as BMW M vehicles achieved 16,400 sales in the US, bringing the total number of high-performance Bimmers sold to 36,000 in these two regions.

It’s important to note that these statistics only reflect the sales of full-fledged M models. Vehicles like the M340i are excluded, but the higher-priced XM model is included. Interestingly, the polarizing performance SUV, the 2023 BMW XM, has performed exceptionally well. In the US, 1,171 units were sold by the end of June, with a similar number finding homes in Europe.
Although these figures may not appear extraordinary, it’s worth mentioning that the 2023 BMW XM has a starting price of $159,995 in the US. It has outperformed many more affordable performance vehicles, including its two-seat counterpart, the BMW Z4.
