Top Rust Technician Cuts Ties with 2 Executive Producers Amid Negligence Lawsuit

The negligence lawsuit filed by Serge Svetnoy, the chief lighting technician of the film “Rust,” against multiple parties, including Alec Baldwin, has resulted in the dismissal of two executive producers as defendants. Svetnoy’s attorney requested the dismissal of claims against Chris M.B. Sharp and Jennifer Lamb, although the reason for this dismissal is not specified in the court papers. The request is made “without prejudice,” leaving the possibility open for Sharp and Lamb to be brought back into the case at a later time.

In addition to Baldwin, Svetnoy’s lawsuit also names other defendants, including armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, in relation to the tragic on-set shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on October 21, 2021. Svetnoy alleges that the shooting resulted from the negligent actions of the defendants and claims to have felt the bullet pass by him.

Svetnoy’s suit, filed in November 2021, further states that he was struck by gunpowder and other residual materials on the right side of his face.

Svetnoy was among the first members of the “Rust” crew to publicly address the shooting of Hutchins. He witnessed the incident while Baldwin was assisting with camera angles on the set near Santa Fe. The prop weapon, which was supposed to contain blanks, discharged a live bullet that tragically struck Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza. Svetnoy took to social media to express his belief that the shooting was a result of negligence on the part of Gutierrez-Reed and assistant director David Halls, who both failed to properly check the weapon before passing it to Baldwin.

Gutierrez-Reed has pleaded not guilty to charges of involuntary manslaughter and evidence tampering in Hutchins’ death in New Mexico.
