Tata Motors Dominates CV Retail Sales in August 2023 Despite YoY De-Growth

Tata Motors has claimed the top spot in commercial vehicle retail sales for the month of August 2023, although experiencing a decline compared to the previous year. According to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Association (FADA), there was a 3.32 percent year-on-year (YoY) and 3.05 percent month-on-month (MoM) growth in total CV retail sales, totaling 75,294 units. This is an increase from the 72,940 units sold in August 2022 and 73,065 units in July 2023.

Retail sales for Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) exhibited a YoY decline, with 43,929 units sold in August 2023 compared to 45,403 units in August 2022. However, there was a 1.60 percent MoM improvement from the 43,236 units sold in July 2023. Sales of Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCVs) experienced a 15.16 percent YoY growth, reaching 5,895 units compared to 5,119 units in August 2022. However, on a MoM basis, sales dropped by 4.64 percent from 6,182 units in July 2023. Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCVs) witnessed a 6.87 percent YoY and 7.56 percent MoM growth, with a total of 22,137 units sold. Additionally, other segments within this category reported significant growth in retail sales, reaching 3,333 units.

Tata Motors experienced a decline in CV sales in August 2023, with a total of 27,483 units sold compared to 29,107 units in August 2022. The market share also dropped from 39.91 percent YoY to 36.50 percent. However, there was a month-on-month growth from the 26,635 units sold in July 2023. In contrast, all other OEMs on the list achieved a year-on-year growth in CV retail sales.

Mahindra secured the second position, selling 19,168 units last month, which represents a growth of 1,686 units compared to August 2022. Their market share improved from 23.97 percent YoY to 25.46 percent. Ashok Leyland claimed the third spot with retail sales of 11,297 units in August 2023, a marginal increase from 11,292 units in August 2022.
