According to Reuters, a senior executive at Truth Social, the app created by former President Trump, has resigned, marking another setback for the struggling platform.
Alex Gleason, who was hired as the head of engineering for Truth Social in January 2022 to adapt his social media software, Soapbox, for Trump’s app, announced that he will be leaving Trump Media & Technology Group to focus on expanding Soapbox. The goal is to bring Soapbox, which aims to promote “the freedom of decentralized social media,” to social network Nostr.
Trump founded Truth Social after his Facebook and Twitter accounts were suspended due to his posts about the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.
The app was designed as an alternative to mainstream social media platforms and claimed to be “free from political discrimination.”
Since its launch in February 2022, Truth Social has struggled to attract as many users as initially anticipated, falling short compared to its more established competitors. While the app aimed to reach 81 million users by 2026, it currently has around 2 million active users, according to the latest reports. In contrast, Twitter has approximately 450 million active users, and Facebook has 2.91 billion active users.
