Top DA Receives $2.05 Million Grant for Combatting Retail Theft: Here’s How!

The Riverside County District Attorney’s Office is set to receive a substantial grant of $2.05 million from the Board of State and Community Corrections. This grant will be dedicated to combating organized retail theft, a prevalent issue in the region.

To effectively address this problem, the District Attorney’s Office will launch a program that provides prosecutors with a skilled and experienced team. This team will consist of a full-time investigator, district attorney, technician, and research specialist.

District Attorney Mike Hestrin acknowledges the significance of this issue, which affects both consumers and retailers in Southern California. The ORT program aims to employ proven strategies specifically tailored to identify the masterminds behind these operations and hold them accountable for their actions.

Since the implementation of the California law PC 490.4, which deems any person involved in the theft of merchandise worth more than $950 as a felony, the Riverside District Attorney’s office has handled a total of 53 organized retail theft cases.

The grant program will be overseen by Managing Deputy District Attorney Chris Bouffard, a seasoned professional with 23 years of experience. This program is scheduled to run from October 1, 2021, until September 30, 2026.

California has also provided funding for 12 prosecutor’s offices and 38 law enforcement agencies to combat organized retail theft.
