Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee made history at this year’s Tony Awards as the first openly nonbinary actors to win awards. Newell won best featured actor in a musical for their role in “Shucked,” while Ghee won for their lead performance in “Some Like it Hot” as a musician on a journey of gender discovery. Toby Marlow became the first nonbinary Tony winner last year for best original score. The awards come after nonbinary actor Justin David Sullivan withdrew themselves from consideration because of the American Theatre Wing’s use of gendered categories. The Tonys stated they are currently in discussion to adjust their categories for future seasons to be more inclusive. In an interview, Newell explained their decision to submit in the “actor” category, hoping to create more lanes for performers who don’t identify within traditional gender categories.
