Together, we’ve supported one another after being diagnosed with breast cancer within eight months

Two sisters, Barbara-Ann Mackay and Sarah-Jane Shellard, along with their auntie, Audrey Anderson, all received a breast cancer diagnosis within eight months of each other in 2018. These three brave women have come together to support each other and raise money and awareness for their cause by participating in a charity walk. Barbara-Ann, a teacher, expresses the importance of their close-knit family and the support they have provided one another throughout their individual treatments. She emphasizes the fact that cancer affects people of all ages and urges others to seek medical attention if they sense something is wrong with their bodies.

In 2015, Barbara-Ann had a lump in her left breast examined, but it was dismissed as a blocked milk duct. It wasn’t until her auntie, Audrey, was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2018 that Barbara-Ann decided to have her lump reevaluated. Despite her age, Barbara-Ann had to wait five weeks for an appointment due to her low priority status. Eventually, she too was diagnosed with breast cancer and began treatment. Just three months later, Sarah-Jane discovered a lump in her left breast and received a diagnosis as well.

All three women received treatment at Ninewells hospital in Dundee and supported each other by attending chemotherapy appointments together. They discuss the emotional toll of being diagnosed and the overwhelming amount of information that bombards them during this time. Barbara-Ann reveals that she didn’t cry for the first ten weeks after her diagnosis and only truly comprehended the magnitude of her situation when she learned she would be starting chemotherapy. Each individual had different treatments, with Sarah-Jane even facing two different types of cancer and enduring respiratory failure and intensive care at one point.

Now, five years after their diagnoses, the trio is participating in the Edinburgh MoonWalk on September 9 to raise funds for breast cancer charity Walk the Walk. This annual challenge involves walking a midnight marathon through the streets while wearing decorated bras. Barbara-Ann, Sarah-Jane, and Audrey will be joined by a team of twelve individuals raising funds for the walk, with three more people volunteering. Barbara-Ann expresses her gratitude for the opportunity to give back to breast cancer research and fulfill their long-held dream of participating in the MoonWalk.
