Toby Keith Shares Cancer Update at People’s Choice Country Awards – Billboard’s Exclusive Report

Toby Keith, the recipient of the Country Icon award at the inaugural People’s Choice Country Awards on Thursday night (Sept. 28), recently provided an update on his ongoing battle with stomach cancer, which he was diagnosed with in 2021.

On the red carpet, Keith shared, “I’ve walked down some dark hallways. Almighty’s riding shotgun. But overall, I’m feeling pretty good. It’s a roller coaster ride with good and bad days. I’m in a much better place compared to this time last year.” When it comes to staying strong, the 60-year-old star relies on his faith, stating, “Just my faith. I’ve always held onto my prayers. As long as I have Him with me, I’m cool. You just have to persevere. You don’t really have a choice.”

In June 2022, Keith publicly disclosed his stomach cancer diagnosis. In a tweet, he stated, “Last fall, I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I’ve been undergoing chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery over the past six months. So far, things are looking good. Right now, I need time to breathe, recover, and relax.” The singer added, “I’m looking forward to spending quality time with my family. But rest assured, I’ll be back to see my fans sooner than later. I can’t wait.”

During the People’s Choice Country Awards, Keith performed his song “Don’t Let the Old Man In,” which he wrote for Clint Eastwood’s film The Mule. Given his diagnosis, the track took on a more poignant and reflective tone. The lyrics go, “And I knew all of my life, that someday it would end. Get up and go outside, don’t let the old man in.”
