Tips from Comedian Alex Edelman on How to Succeed on Broadway

Alex Edelman, the popular writer-comedian, has taken New York’s Broadway by storm with his one-man show “Alex Edelman: Just for Us.” Although his show is a solo comedy with no musical numbers, stunning sets, or a cast of stars performing timeless classics, Alex believes nothing beats a night on Broadway. On this Tony Sunday, Alex shares not just what it’s like to have a show on Broadway, but also how to get it there.

The first step in getting a show to Broadway is to come up with a unique idea rather than a rehashed musical about a ten-dollar bill guy or a play about a dying salesman. Alex’s show, for instance, is based on a personal incident where he attended a meeting of white nationalists, which was a little uncomfortable given that he was Jewish, but great for comedy.

Unfortunately, getting a show to Broadway is easier said than done. Alex put up his show in a pub behind a London shoe store before polishing it up in smaller venues and at festivals over a three-year period. He advises aspiring Broadway composers to adore their shows and be content to perform anywhere they can.

Despite the challenges, the payoff is worth it. A year after Alex’s show sold out 160 shows in a row Off-Broadway, he found himself invited to perform on Broadway. According to Alex, performing on Broadway is identical to Off-Broadway, except that it’s not at all the same. The Broadhurst Theatre, where his show is currently playing, is one of the nicest theatres he’s ever seen. Plus, it’s Broadway!

Alex reminds us that everyone performing on Broadway desperately wants to be there. While eight shows a week, competition from the M&M store, and singing about baking humans into pies can be challenging, everyone at the Tonys has worked hard to get there.

Finally, Alex admits that it’s a dream come true to perform his solo show about killing a mockingbird on Broadway. Despite the fact that he’s ineligible for this year’s Tony Awards, he’s optimistic about the future and always thinking about what he can dream about next.

In conclusion, getting a show to Broadway is not for the faint of heart, but it is a rewarding experience. With determination and perseverance, anything is possible. For more information, tune into the 76th Tony Awards presented live on CBS and Paramount+ on June 11 at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
