Time to Raise Our Voices: Putting an End to the Inflated Cost of Living

Dublin Hotels Warned of Excessive Prices for Taylor Swift Concert

The upcoming Taylor Swift concert in Dublin next June has prompted warnings to hotels regarding their potential for charging exorbitant prices. This unfortunate trend has become all too common in the capital, with hotels taking advantage of large crowds. It is important for us to address this issue and prioritize value. When we consider that one in seven parents struggle to provide for their families due to the high cost of food, we must take notice. But what actions are being taken to address this concern? – Claire Mulrooney, Birr, Co Offaly

Preserving Neutrality as a Mark of Moral Maturity

We are well aware that young children may resort to slapping, kicking, or even pinching when they experience anger, frustration, confusion, or fear. However, as they develop their language skills, we teach them how to express their needs, wants, and fears using words instead of aggressive actions. By the time they enter school, we hope that our children possess the skills to communicate with their teachers and peers without resorting to violence.

Parents and teachers put in great effort to educate children about bullying and exclusion as they grow older. If these ideals and expectations exist for our children, why then is it deemed acceptable for adults to resort to violence when they themselves experience anger, frustration, confusion, or fear? Shouldn’t we have the capacity for language and communication to resolve conflicts without violence, demonstrating moral maturity?

As our esteemed President, Michael D Higgins, has warned us, I believe we are gradually veering towards militarism. It appears that our army is deviating from its traditional role as peacekeepers and embracing a more aggressive stance with the formation of “battle groups”. Militarism involves misguided attempts to resolve conflicts through fear, aggression, and violence, and at its worst, it involves bullying and annihilation.

In my opinion, this sets a poor example for our children and young people and should come with the caveat: “Do as I say, not as I do.” If we give up our neutrality and align ourselves with aggressive military organizations like NATO, we effectively make our children and young people “legitimate targets” in wars they did not create, fought by people who may have been their friends. – Marian Naughton, Gleann na Gréine, Naas, Co Kildare

No Objection to Gardaí Wearing Body Cameras

Unfortunately, there are places in the world with sectarian police forces or police forces that are part of oppressive regimes. In such cases, opposition to police officers wearing body cameras would be understandable. However, in An Garda Síochána, we have a community police force, making it reasonable to support them having body cameras. – Brendan Casserly, Bishopstown, Cork

Rape Case Exposes Flaw in State Care System

Anyone with a loved one in a nursing home would feel both enraged and saddened by the media reports of rape and sexual assault on nursing home residents by a member of staff. This deeply shakes the very foundation of eldercare in Ireland.

I would like to pay tribute to the late and courageous Emily, whose testimony brought the perpetrator to justice. It is particularly concerning to learn that other female residents had made similar allegations but were not believed or heard. Staff dismissed their claims, attributing them to confusion, delusion, or hallucinations.

The fact that this occurred in a residential facility managed by the Health Service Executive (HSE) only adds to the horror. These families entrusted their elderly and vulnerable loved ones to the care of the state. The fact that a state-run facility failed to adhere to safeguarding procedures is truly shocking, especially when we consider the infamous Brandon case, where individuals with intellectual disabilities suffered sexual abuse for 13 years in another HSE-run residential center.

How and why has this happened once again? It is long overdue for our nursing homes, both public and private, to adopt a person-centered care model that prioritizes human rights and respects the needs and wishes of each individual resident. – Joe Boyle, Shankill, Co Dublin
