The global phenomenon Blackpink has been crowned as Time magazine’s 2022 Entertainer of the Year, following in the footsteps of fellow K-pop superstars BTS, who received the honor in 2020. This recognition solidifies the four-member girl group’s meteoric rise to stardom since their debut in 2016.
YG Entertainment, a prestigious South Korean record label known for talent scouting and intensive training, handpicked the quartet – consisting of Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa, and Rosé – who quickly garnered international fame.
Their debut LP, “The Album,” achieved phenomenal success, selling over a million copies within a month of its release in 2020.
In a special feature by Time commemorating their Entertainer of the Year accolade, Blackpink reflected on their journey – from their historic performance at Coachella in 2019 to their captivating rendition of “Pink Venom” at the VMAs this year.
Time quoted rapper Jennie as saying, “We put in a tremendous amount of effort to be like superwomen, but deep down, we’re just regular girls.”
Jennie also emphasized that their performances are driven by genuine passion, stating, “If we approached this from a purely business perspective, we wouldn’t be able to achieve what we have.”
One of the contributing factors to Blackpink’s global triumph is their diverse backgrounds. Singer Rosé, who was born in New Zealand and raised in Australia, highlighted the advantage of their multiculturalism in the studio.
Jennie, hailing from South Korea but raised in New Zealand, and Lisa, originally from Thailand, add further cultural richness to the group. Jisoo, on the other hand, is the sole member born and raised in South Korea.
Currently, Blackpink is captivating audiences across Europe as part of their “Born Pink” world tour, which commenced in October and will continue until the end of the year.
