Tiger Shark Kills Russian Man off Red Sea Coast in Egypt.

In a tragic incident, a Russian man lost his life in Egypt’s Red Sea resorts after being mauled by a tiger shark. The authorities have closed off a 46-mile stretch of coastline near the city of Hurghada until Sunday and have caught the shark to examine it in a laboratory to determine the reasons for the rare attack. The Russian Consulate in Hurghada identified the man as a Russian citizen, but his name has not been disclosed.

A video of the incident shows the man thrashing in water before being repeatedly attacked by a circling shark and dragged under. While shark attacks are rare in the Red Sea coastal regions, it must be noted that two fatal attacks took place in 2022 in Hughada killing an Austrian and a Romanian tourist.

Egypt’s Red Sea resorts, including Sharm el-Sheikh and Hurghada, are renowned beach destinations, attracting many European tourists. The steep drop-offs of coral reefs offshore attract divers who get a chance to witness the rich and colorful sea life. Egypt has been making concerted efforts to revive its tourism sector that has been hurt by years of political instability, the pandemic, and the war in Ukraine.

Tiger sharks are among the largest species that reside in tropical and temperate waters and are responsible for most unprovoked attacks on humans, as per the International Shark Attack File. The incident is a grim reminder of the fragile co-existence between humans and nature.
