Thriving Trend: Solo Living Skyrockets in Major US Cities

  • According to a new study, there has been an increase in the number of people living alone in US cities between 2016 and 2023.
  • Within the 342 largest US cities, the rate of single people living alone has risen to 28%.
  • Interestingly, Odessa, Texas is the only city that experienced a rise in the number of married families with children.

In the midst of declining birth and marriage rates across the country, it is not surprising to see an increase in the number of people living alone in American cities.

A new study by SmartAsset analyzed household compositions in hundreds of US cities and found that the rate of single individuals living alone has jumped to 28% between 2016 and 2021. Out of the 342 largest US cities included in the study, only Odessa, Texas saw an increase in married families with children during this five-year period.

The study also revealed that “traditional families,” consisting of married couples with children, were most prevalent in Frisco, Texas; Fishers, Indiana; Fremont, California; and Elk Grove, California. These cities had traditional families accounting for one-third of all households, according to the study.

Meanwhile, the proportion of single individuals living alone increased from 24% in 2016 to 28% in 2021. Arlington, Virginia experienced the sharpest increase, with the percentage of single-person households rising from 11% to 41% over the five-year period. Similar increases were observed in cities like Alexandria, Virginia; College Station, Texas; Madison, Wisconsin; and Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The study also identified cities with the highest share of single-woman households and single-man households. In the DC area, over 25% of households are comprised of single women. In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, nearly one-quarter of all households are composed of single men.

SmartAsset conducted the study by analyzing household data from the US Census and examining all American cities with populations greater than 100,000.
