Oct. 18 (UPI) — Officials from animal control in Illinois have issued a public statement regarding a serval, an African exotic cat, that is currently roaming the city of Decatur. This unusual animal has been sighted on the northeast side of the city, according to the Macon County Animal Control and Care Center.

The animal control team has reassured the public that there is no reason to believe the serval poses a threat to humans. However, they have also emphasized that, like any wild animal, it could be dangerous under certain circumstances. With this in mind, authorities have urged local residents to avoid attempting to capture the cat without professional assistance.

Reese, the serval cat, belonged to Christopher Solomon, who revealed that the animal had been living with him in his apartment for approximately two weeks before making its daring escape through an open door. Solomon shared his experience with local news outlet WAND-TV, stating that he woke up in the middle of the night, cold and puzzled, only to find the door wide open and his beloved cat missing. Despite efforts from the police and Animal Control, Reese disappeared without a trace.
