Thrilling and Unsettling Mystery-Horror Flicks in a Tight Contest

The Nun 2 and A Haunting in Venice essentially tied for the top spot in US and Canadian theaters this weekend, with the horror sequel edging out the Hercule Poirot mystery, based on studio estimates. Warner Bros.’ The Nun 2 brought in $14.7 million in its second weekend, which, if the numbers hold, will give the film a total of up to $56.5 million domestically and $158.8 million worldwide, securing its position as the box office leader for the second consecutive week. Close on its heels was A Haunting in Venice, Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of an Agatha Christie story, which opened with $14.5 million, according to the AP.

After the success of Murder on the Orient Express ($352.8 million worldwide on a $55 million budget) and the less impressive performance of Death on the Nile ($137.3 million on a $90 million budget), the lackluster start for A Haunting in Venice could spell trouble for Branagh’s detective franchise. The film earned $22.7 million internationally and had a production budget of about $60 million, lower than its predecessor. Despite being one of the slowest weekends in movie theaters this year, Barbie remained in the top five films for the ninth consecutive weekend, adding $4 million to bring its domestic total to $625 million and its worldwide earnings to $1.42 billion. Oppenheimer grossed $912.7 million, making it the highest-grossing biopic ever, surpassing Bohemian Rhapsody.

Here are the estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to Comscore. Final domestic figures will be released on Monday.

  1. The Nun II, $14.7 million.
  2. A Haunting in Venice, $14.5 million.
  3. The Equalizer 3, $7.2 million.
