Three passengers of Hawaiian Airlines were hospitalized after the flight encountered “severe turbulence.”

During a flight from Honolulu to Sydney, the plane experienced unexpected turbulence, resulting in injuries to three passengers, as reported by The Guardian.

Upon landing in Sydney, emergency services examined 12 individuals, three of whom were taken to the hospital for treatment of their injuries, according to a spokesperson from the New South Wales ambulance service.

The Airbus A330 had medics on board who initially treated four passengers and three crew members.

Hawaiian Airlines expressed their prioritization of caring for the affected passengers and crew members and thanked Sydney airport’s first responders for their prompt assistance.

The aircraft was inspected before its return to Honolulu later that evening.

A passenger recounted their experience to the Sydney Morning Herald, describing how turbulence caused passengers to be tossed around and the plane to suddenly drop.

Melissa Matheso, a passenger on the flight, mentioned that her husband prevented another passenger, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, from hitting the ceiling.

Some passengers and a crew member had ice packs for their heads.

Due to strong winds, over 100 flights from Sydney were canceled, including those from Qantas, Virgin, and Jetstar, as reported by the Daily Mail Australia.

Insider reached out to Hawaiian Airlines for comment, but no response was received outside of regular working hours.
