Thomas Admits to Traveling on Donor’s Private Jet

Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has revealed that he traveled on three occasions last year using a private plane owned by Republican megadonor Harlan Crow. This disclosure comes after years of Thomas receiving undisclosed expensive gifts from Crow, including international travel. Thomas made this information public in a disclosure report, citing compliance with new guidelines for reporting travel from the federal judiciary.

In addition to the private plane trips, Crow also bought a house in Georgia where Thomas’ mother still resides. Crow also covered two years of private school tuition for a child that Thomas and his wife raised. One of the trips Thomas reported was to Crow’s lodge in the Adirondack Mountains in New York, a destination that Thomas visits annually according to investigative news site ProPublica. The remaining two trips were to Dallas, where Thomas spoke at conferences hosted by the conservative think tank, the American Enterprise Institute.

Thomas mentioned that court officials recommended avoiding commercial travel for one of the trips due to security concerns following the leak of a draft abortion opinion that overturned Roe v. Wade. Thomas also acknowledged that he had not reported Crow’s purchase of the home in Savannah, Georgia, where his mother resides, as he thought it resulted in a capital loss. He is considering amending previous reports to include additional private plane travel.

The financial reports for Thomas and Justice Samuel Alito were released on Thursday, three months later than the other seven justices. Thomas and Alito were granted a 90-day extension. (Read more Clarence Thomas stories.)
