July 27 (UPI) — A Virginia woman was the unexpected recipient of a staggering number of Amazon packages that she had never ordered. The boxes contained various items such as headlamps, glue guns, and binoculars.

Cindy Smith, residing in Prince William County, noticed the sudden arrival of packages at her doorstep. To her surprise, she discovered over 1,000 headlamps, 800 glue guns, and numerous pairs of binoculars.

Smith, who was initially perplexed by the situation, shared, “A lot of people told me I was weird. I would drive around with headlamps and glue guns in the car. I gave them to everybody I met.” She admitted that she had no knowledge of the name printed on the packages, a certain Lixiao Zhang.

Upon realizing the unusual circumstances, Smith suspected that it might be a brushing scam. In a brushing scam, online vendors create fake sales to misleadingly boost their product reviews. To investigate further, Smith consulted Amazon officials.

In a similar incident, Liz Geltman from Washington, D.C., experienced an influx of children’s sheets being delivered to her residence without her placing any orders. Amazon authorities were alerted to both cases and discovered that unsold merchandise from Amazon fulfillment centers were being sent to random addresses by vendors.

In explaining the motive behind this scheme, attorney CJ Rosenbaum based in New York stated, “It all boils down to money. You have sellers located in China, who are just picking random addresses. And then when they need to get their products out of Amazon’s warehouses, they’re just having them sent there because it’s just cheaper for them to do so.”

Amazon promptly took action by closing the seller’s account in response to the incident. However, it remains uncertain if a similar scam was responsible for Connie Mathews from Sacramento, California. In December 2022, Mathews received approximately 100 space heaters from Amazon that she had never ordered.
