This summer, Suella Braverman raises concern about an impending increase in Albanian migrants crossing the Channel

A recent poll conducted by Swiss Contact and financed by the UK Government has revealed startling statistics about migration desires in northern Albania, one of the most economically disadvantaged regions. The study found that 38% of the population in this area expressed a desire to leave.

Among those eager to emigrate, a staggering 59% expressed a preference for the UK, while only 20% selected Germany and a mere 7% chose the United States. Additionally, 47% of individuals who wanted to move to the UK already had relatives residing there. Of note, young Albanians constituted the largest group who expressed a desire to migrate to the UK.

Last year, the UK witnessed a record-breaking influx of migrants, with 45,700 individuals crossing the Channel. Among this group, a quarter were Albanian. Despite declines in other categories, Afghans, Iraqis, and Iranians remained the largest migrant groups. However, there has been a notable increase in migrants from India (98 to 855), Turkey (169 to 516), and Vietnam (279 to 342).

A representative from the Home Office emphasized their appreciation for the Albanian community in the UK and the collaborative efforts between the UK and Albanian governments to address illegal immigration. The spokesperson stated, “We will continue to actively combat the activities of organized criminal networks, expedite the removal of individuals without the right to be in the UK, and raise awareness among migrants about the dangers of small boat crossings. Compared to last year, the number of Albanian small boat arrivals has dropped by almost 90%, and through our Joint Communique, we have successfully repatriated approximately 1,800 Albanian nationals who were residing in the UK without legal authorization.”
