Third Eye Blind Singer Engages in Friendly Conversation with Fan at Airport Prior to Signing Autograph

An encounter at the airport involving Stephan Jenkins, the lead singer of 90s rock band Third Eye Blind, and a man seeking an autograph, has recently gone viral. This incident has sparked a discussion about Jenkins’ conduct and the ethics of reselling signed celebrity items.

The interaction was captured on video at Dulles airport by Mark Wilkins, a DC-based celebrity photographer. In the video, Jenkins can be seen at the baggage claim, being approached for an autograph. According to Wilkins, there were both fans and professional autograph dealers waiting for Jenkins at the airport. When it became apparent that Jenkins was not going to sign autographs for everyone, the group followed him to the baggage claim area.

Wilkins, who filmed the incident but was not the one seeking an autograph, stated that Jenkins could have signed for everyone in just three minutes, instead of giving a ten-minute lecture. In the video, Jenkins initially questions the autograph-seeker, asking him to name a song from the group’s 2003 album, “Out of the Vein.” Jenkins then explains his hesitation, expressing concern about the autographs being sold on eBay.

Eventually, Jenkins agrees to sign one record for the autograph-seeker, who goes by the name Nick. In a statement to Insider, Jenkins clarified that he enjoys signing merchandise for fans and hearing their stories. However, he wants to avoid being exploited by those who are only interested in profiting from him or fan culture.

Jenkins also shared his confusion over how autograph dealers always manage to track him down at airports and hotels. He jokingly mentioned having a mole inside the government who informs them of his travel plans. Wilkins, on the other hand, sees his role as providing a service by enabling fans to obtain authentic memorabilia.

Commenters on Wilkins’ video expressed differing opinions. Some questioned Jenkins’ reaction and believed he may have exaggerated his importance. Others defended Jenkins, acknowledging his right to be cautious and understanding his perspective.
