German pharmaceutical company BioNTech is facing a surge of compensation claims from two law firms alleging that their clients suffered lasting health damage after receiving the company’s coronavirus vaccine. The legal challenge will take place in Hamburg and is one of several hundred cases being pursued by the two firms. Prominent Düsseldorf-based firm, Rogert & Ulbrich, is one of the firms and the head of the company, Tobias Ulbrich, has railed against vaccine makers on social media. The other is the Wiesbaden-based Cäsar-Preller, who won damages for consumers from German carmaker Volkswagen over its diesel emissions scandal. BioNTech, which was responsible for over 75% of the 224 million vaccine doses administered in Germany, pioneered the use of messenger RNA in vaccines. Ulbrich had previously made false claims that billionaire Bill Gates intended to reduce Germany’s population to 27 million using vaccinations, and that some of his clients had shown signs of “vaccine-acquired immunodeficiency syndrome.” Despite rare cases of side effects, BioNTech stated that it was confident the cases would be dismissed, and that it had opted not to set aside provisions to cover compensation claims.
