The Yankees must avoid further setbacks in the absence of Aaron Judge.

Willie Calhoun stood in right field just below the Judge’s Chambers at the start of Sunday’s rubber game against the Red Sox. Media relations associate, Tristan Vitale, distributed black robes shortly before the first pitch. Unfortunately, the jurors sitting in the Chambers missed No. 99, and so did the Yankees, who lost 3-2 in 10 innings, reminding us of the impact of Aaron Judge’s absence. The Yankees’ pitching staff is under immense strain without Judge, leaving the team desperate for someone to pick up the slack. Unfortunately, no one did, leaving the Yankees chanting “Volpe, Volpe” in the 10th inning.

The team desperately needs Judge back, and Tuesday night’s Subway Series opener at Citi Field against the Mets cannot come soon enough. Without Judge, the Yankees have no margin for error, and Gleyber Torres’ lazy play in the eighth inning allowed the Red Sox to score the tying run. The Yankees bullpen, which had been doing well, was unable to provide enough relief, making it clear that Judge’s return is crucial for the Yankees.

In addition to Torres’ error, a couple of things that didn’t go right for the Yankees cost them the game. For instance, Anthony Rizzo was picked off second by starter Brayan Bello with two outs in the sixth inning, and Rizzo is struggling through a 1-for-30 slump since June 2. The Yankees are 8-10 without Judge and have only scored 21 runs in the seven games since his injury.

The Yankees need to start winning without Judge if they want to be a playoff team. Judge is the Yankees’ $360M man, and without him, they look just like any other team. The Mets are facing similar issues without Pete Alonso, making the upcoming Flubway Series all the more interesting.
