The ‘X’ Rebrand by Elon Musk Sparks Non-Stop Roasting on Twitter

Twitter users are bidding farewell to the blue bird in a creative and witty manner, as they flood the platform with memes and mockery following Elon Musk’s announcement of rebranding the social media giant as “X.”

Musk revealed his plan to change the company’s iconic bird logo to a simple and striking “X.” This move, which is another dramatic transformation to the platform since Musk’s acquisition of it for $44 billion last year, was poorly-received. The logo change was implemented early Monday morning.

In a Sunday night revelation, Musk showcased the new logo — the letter “X” with one stroke thicker than the other. He later shared a photo of the projected logo on the company’s headquarters.

Linda Yaccarino, the former NBC Universal executive appointed as Twitter CEO by Musk in May, praised the decision by stating, “Twitter made a significant impact and revolutionized our way of communication. Now, X will take us further, transforming the global town square.”

Musk’s affinity for the letter “X” is well-documented. He is the owner of SpaceX, a rocket company, and in 1999, he founded X.com, which later became the popular online payment service PayPal. Additionally, Musk and singer Grimes share a child named X Æ A-12.

Last year, Musk stated that the Twitter acquisition “is an accelerant to creating X, the everything app.”

Under Musk’s ownership, the company has undergone significant changes. It laid off a majority of its staff, faced a loss in advertisers, and experienced an increase in hate speech and the return of users banned for misconduct. In May, asset manager Fidelity valued Twitter at approximately a third of its purchase price by Musk.

As users bid farewell to the globally-recognized brand that introduced terms like “tweet” and “retweet,” the hashtag #GoodbyeTwitter trended on Monday morning. Users expressed their thoughts and opinions on the change in typical Twitter fashion, with witty and humorous commentary.
