The Unveiling of Ancient Hatred: Insights into Hamas-Israel Conflict in American Higher Education

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The war that Hamas launched against Israel has sparked a wave of antisemitism worldwide. We have witnessed large-scale celebrations of the murder of Israeli citizens, with crowds chanting “gas the Jews.” Even governments like Iran have celebrated this slaughter in the name of Islam.

American university campuses have become a hotbed for these outbreaks of antisemitism. Demonstrations and statements have emerged justifying these attacks, claiming that the Hamas terrorist invasion was an “act of liberation,” and blaming Israel entirely for the conflict.

This war has exposed the deep-rooted antisemitism within American higher education.

Thirty-one student organizations at Harvard united to condemn Israel and denounce its perceived “colonial retaliation.” Students at Columbia University assert that Israel bears the weight of responsibility for the war. Similar sentiments have been expressed at Northwestern University, Yale, Portland State, City College and Hunter College in New York, Boston University, and Stanford. Undoubtedly, more universities will follow suit. These groups not only oppose Israel but also exhibit anti-Jewish sentiment.

This reminds me of a conversation I had in Israel this past April. I was traveling with a group of politically progressive Jewish friends when one of them asked, “Why do our children, after attending American colleges, become so hostile towards Israel? What is happening in our universities?”

At that moment, I spoke up as one of the few Christians (an evangelical!) in the group. I said, “Not all universities are like that. The institution where I serve does not have that effect on its students. Our students are largely pro-Israel!” My friends were confused by my statement. They didn’t know how to process it!

They themselves acknowledged the prevalence of anti-Israel and anti-Jewish bias in many universities. But why is this happening?

It’s because these schools have been promoting leftist theories for decades, which breed hatred towards Israel and contempt for Jews. Utilizing left-wing anti-colonial rhetoric, they teach students that Israelis are the extremists, and that retaliation against the so-called “colonial oppressors” is entirely justified. They employ the language of neo-Marxism that divides the world into oppressed and oppressor categories, encouraging the overthrow of the oppressor class. The BDS (boycott, divestment, sanctions) movement has long been advocating for this ideology. Moreover, they nurture an anti-Western bias and perceive Judeo-Christian values as oppressive.

Many educators have been teaching these ideologies for years, so it’s not surprising to see students now acting on them by celebrating the slaughter.

However, not all universities endorse this insanity. At Colorado Christian University, we condemn Hamas’s campaign of terror against Israel. We stand with Israel, opposing the jihadists, affirming its right to exist, defend itself, and pursue those who have attacked it. Furthermore, we deplore the rising antisemitism globally and within our own universities. As a Christian university, we acknowledge God’s unique covenant with Israel in the past, the special place of the Jews in salvation history, and our indebtedness to them. Our hearts go out to our Jewish and Palestinian friends, whose lives have been horrifically disrupted by the actions of Hamas.

We urge other Christian universities not to downplay the significance of these events. This act of terrorism, this massacre of over a thousand people, is the largest attack on Jews since the Holocaust. It is a time of national catastrophe for Israel and Jews worldwide. Let us not be naive about its intent. Hamas, whose full name is The Islamic Resistance Movement, is an extreme Islamic organization and a terrorist group, despite the refusal of the UN and others to acknowledge it as such. It has remained true to its 1988 charter, stating its goal to destroy Israel through jihad. It rejects Israel’s peace treaties and calls upon Muslims globally to liberate Palestine.

We urge other Christian universities to recognize that this attack was deliberately timed and meticulously planned. It occurred on the 75th anniversary of the founding of the state of Israel and the anniversary of the Yom Kippur War. We call upon you not to embrace the false moral equivalence being propagated between Hamas terrorists and the democratic state of Israel. Hamas has gone on a rampage resembling that of ISIS, brutally killing, raping, and kidnapping men, women, children, and the elderly to use them as human shields.

Above all, let us not fall into the trap of the world’s oldest hatred, “the hatred that won’t go away.” Instead, let us speak out. Condemn this barbaric assault and pray for peace in Jerusalem, Palestine, Gaza, and the entire Middle East.
