Brynn’s intelligence adds an arresting quality to this sequence. Every move she makes is purposeful, strategic, and smart. She bravely fights back, making her a protagonist worth rooting for instead of dismissing. Meanwhile, Duffield effectively utilizes the house’s architecture to instill fear and create tension. From clever use of hidden spaces to eerie, distorted shadows cast through textured glass, the enchanting charm of the house we’ve come to know during the day transforms into a gut-wrenching sense of dread.
However, as the scene progresses, it begins to lose the brilliance captured in its opening moments. Duffield misses out on great opportunities for scares and resorts to using the alien in gimmicky ways that diminish the fear felt by the audience. While the initial scenes of the film are the strongest overall, “No One Will Save You” suffers from a lack of narrative context, becoming frustrating for viewers.
Brynn is haunted by the loss of her mother, and her own community shuns her for reasons only hinted at. The invasion forces her beyond the boundaries of her property, exposing her to a primal urge to escape the coldness of her surroundings. While we witness the trauma she experiences, we are left in the dark about the reasons behind it. The script fails to effectively elicit empathy and investment in her struggle because it doesn’t provide enough focus on her character. Instead, it takes us through a repetitive cycle of cat-and-mouse chase sequences without providing clarity.
Duffield’s film lacks a solid foundation and leaves the audience bewildered by the intended fear. Themes of social isolation, unresolved trauma, and the search for redemption are barely explored amidst the chaotic and exhausting sequences. “No One Will Save You” is a slow burn that viewers long for to quicken its pace. Dever’s performance holds the film together, relying solely on physicality to convey emotions. Although we can understand and feel everything she portrays, she becomes secondary to the repetitive and excessive alien sequences that undermine the film’s emotional depth.
The creative intentions are commendable, and Dever excels in her role, but the execution of the film falls short. When some background is finally provided, it feels too late and lacks the effort needed to justify the wait. The initial brilliance of the inciting incident is lost throughout the rest of the film, and while “No One Will Save You” strives to be an existential sci-fi journey, it lacks the necessary context and craftsmanship to truly touch the audience’s hearts.
