The UN Reveals Shallow Mass Grave in West Darfur of Sudan with 87 Unearthed Bodies

The United Nations announced on Thursday that a mass grave has been discovered in West Darfur, containing the bodies of dozens of individuals allegedly killed by Sudanese paramilitary and allied militia. This information, obtained by the U.N. Human Rights Office, reveals that the remains of 87 people, including members of the ethnic African Masalit tribe, were found in a shallow grave just outside the city of Geneina.

The burial of the first 37 bodies took place on June 20, followed by an additional 50 bodies on the next day. Among those laid to rest were seven women and seven children. This distressing situation adds to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has already displaced 3.1 million people, according to the United Nations.

The accompanying image displays a body covered on a military vehicle in West Darfur city Geneina, captured amidst the continued fighting in war-torn Sudan. This heartbreaking scene serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of the conflict.

Since April 15, violence has engulfed Sudan, stemming from tensions between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Darfur has become the focal point of this 12-week conflict, marked by ethnic violence as RSF troops and Arab militias target African ethnic groups.

The RSF and allied Arab militias have ravaged the western province, forcing hundreds of thousands of individuals to flee their homes. Many have sought refuge across the border in Chad. Throughout this upheaval, entire towns and villages in West Darfur have been destroyed and looted.

It is important to note that this region has previously experienced genocidal war in the early 2000s, when ethnic Africans rebelled against the Arab-dominated government in Khartoum, citing discrimination. The government, under former dictator Omar al-Bashir, responded by supplying arms to local nomadic Arab tribes known as Janjaweed, who indiscriminately targeted civilians. These Janjaweed fighters were eventually incorporated into the RSF.

The discovery of this mass grave serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing human rights violations in Sudan and the urgent need to address the conflict. Stay informed by downloading the Fox News app.
