The Ultimate Sweet Spot: Exploring the Impressive 320-Mile Truck!

The 2024 Ford F-150 Lightning Flash may not be the high-performance variant we were expecting, but it still offers a compelling package. This trim level is essentially a “greatest hits” edition of the Lightning, incorporating the most desired features according to Ford.

Today, Ford announced the introduction of this new trim level as the production of the Lightning electric truck accelerates. The automaker revealed that there is still a significant number of backorders for this truck, which means some customers might regret not waiting for the Flash variant.

The Lightning Flash sits between the Lariat and XLT trims, offering features that are exclusive to one or the other. According to Ford officials, this makes it the “sweet spot” of the Lightning lineup. Some notable features of the Flash include the 1.2 version of Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free highway driving assistance system, 320 miles of EPA-rated range from its “extended range” battery, and a superior 15.5-inch touchscreen compared to the XLT’s 12-inch unit. Owners can choose to subscribe to BlueCruise on a monthly or annual basis when purchasing the vehicle or try it for free for 90 days.

“The F-150 Lightning Flash is a direct outcome of engaging with and learning from our customers,” said Marin Gjaja, COO of Ford’s electric Model e division. “This truck combines many of the technology-forward features our customers love in our EV lineup, at a more accessible price.

All of these features can be obtained for $69,995, which includes the $7,500 EV tax credit, according to Ford. It’s worth noting that this was previously the price of the Lariat model, which seems to have been elevated in the lineup. The Lariat now starts at $77,495 for the extended-range version.

For reference, here is the pricing breakdown for the F-150 Lightning in the coming year:

Early 2024, the following will be available for online customer orders:

The F-150 Lightning Pro with standard range will be available for order starting at $49,995

The F-150 Lightning XLT with standard range will be available for order starting at $57,495

The F-150 Lightning Flash with extended range will be available for order starting at $69,995

The F-150 Lightning Lariat with extended range will be available for order starting at $77,495

The F-150 Lightning Platinum with extended range will be available for order starting at $89,995

The limited-edition F-150 Lightning Platinum Black with extended range will be available for order at $97,99

Interestingly, the Lightning Flash comes with a heat pump system as standard, a feature not previously available in the F-150 Lightning. Heat pumps are known to be more efficient than traditional resistive heating systems, enabling the vehicle to travel farther on a single charge due to reduced energy consumption for cabin heating.

This raises the question of whether heat pump systems will be offered in other F-150 Lightning variants in 2024. We have reached out to Ford for comment and will provide an update with their response in a future article.

I have also contacted Ford to confirm whether the standard range (240-mile) Lariat has been phased out for 2024. I will update this information once I receive official confirmation. In any case, orders for the Lightning Flash will open early next year.
