The Ultimate Love Story: How We Got Engaged on Our First Date and Never Looked Back!

  • My partner and I met on TikTok in 2020, despite living over 3,000 miles apart.
  • In December 2021, we finally met in person, and our first date lasted a whole week.
  • Surprisingly, we got engaged halfway through the week, and it turned out to be the best decision we’ve ever made.

My partner and I met on TikTok in the middle of 2020. I live in the UK, and he lives in New York. At that time, there were over 3,000 miles and two closed borders between us, so for the first full year that we were together, our relationship was lived through Google Meets and WhatsApp messages.

Over a year later, the US and UK borders finally reopened, and we were able to meet in person. On our first date, we got engaged. Here’s how it went.

I flew to see him in New York

On December 28th, 2021, I finally flew to the US to meet my partner. The journey took over 35 hours, and despite the exhaustion, my excitement remained strong. After a short sleep, I woke up early and traveled to Penn Station.

Outside Penn Station, we met for the first time on a frosty morning. Being together in person surpassed all my expectations. We clicked even more than we did online, and in that moment, I knew he would be the one I spend my life with.

Our first day together was spent in our hotel. We enjoyed takeout, exchanged Christmas gifts, and relished the joy of being in each other’s presence.

We explored the city together and raced to get engaged

On the second day, we explored the city. We visited Christmas markets, Grand Central Terminal, and even caught a Broadway show.

The most memorable day was New Year’s Eve. We woke up early once again, taking the A train to the Rink at Rockefeller Centre. We were headed to the place where we would get engaged.

The engagement wasn’t a surprise. We decided to get engaged together and had planned it out. We both had rings, but we couldn’t agree on who would go first.

So, we turned it into a race. Ultimately, I lost the race, but in losing, I gained a lifetime of happiness and a beautiful engagement ring. I have no complaints.

After getting engaged on the ice, we had breakfast and returned to the hotel. We celebrated the new year in our pajamas after a nap and plenty of takeout. It was perfect. The rest of our trip was spent hand in hand, exploring the sights of New York, but it ended too soon.

We are still together

I reluctantly returned to the UK on 5th January, and despite skepticism from those around me, I was confident in my decision. In those few days together, I confirmed what I already knew – he would be my husband.

Two years later, we are still together and stronger than ever. Getting engaged on our first date was the best decision we’ve ever made.
