A cybersecurity expert from McAfee, the renowned antivirus software developed by entrepreneur John McAfee, has issued a warning about the various ways spyware can infiltrate your computer or smartphone and empty your bank account.
According to the expert, one of the most significant risks is downloading files from untrusted sources. Torrents and file-sharing programs are especially dangerous in this regard.
Another enduring threat is the classic pop-up, which can trigger automatic spyware downloads. As a precaution, the expert advises against clicking ‘Agree,’ ‘OK,’ ‘No,’ or ‘Yes’ on any pop-up.
The spyware threat is particularly alarming due to its ability to stealthily record sensitive personal and financial information, including usernames, passwords, and credit card numbers. This places the user’s identity at significant risk.

For maximum safety, the McAfee source advises completely closing your browser to avoid potential trouble. On a PC, this can be done by accessing the task manager and selecting “end task” for the relevant tabs. For Mac users, the option is to select “force quit” from the dropdown menu.
Regularly updating your device’s operating system is another crucial tip. These updates often include fixes for known vulnerabilities exploited by spyware and other malicious software. Additionally, it is essential to download and use the latest, most secure version of your web browser.
In addition to spyware threats, artificial intelligence (AI) poses a significant risk through its ability to personalize phishing scams. Lisa Palmer, an AI strategist for consulting firm AI Leaders, warns that scammers can create highly personalized campaigns for thousands of targeted victims simultaneously. The creation of phony deepfake video and audio requires minimal sophistication, further amplifying the risk.
A recent example highlighted the potential danger of AI. An Arizona mother received a call with her daughter’s voice claiming she had been kidnapped for ransom. This was made possible through AI voice cloning. Similar instances have occurred in New York City, where children claimed to be arrested and in need of bail money.
To prevent such incidents, Palmer recommends creating a verbal password within families to authenticate their identities during phone calls.
Not only individuals but also major brands and companies have fallen victim to ransomware attacks. Clorox and several of Las Vegas’ largest casinos experienced debilitating attacks recently. Cybersecurity expert Lisa Palmer had previously warned about this threat.

“It’s exceptionally difficult to catch these sophisticated cybercriminal rings,” says Palmer.
