Welcome to Take A Break, your one-stop guide to the ultimate rejuvenating trips where you can reconnect with yourself, your relationships, and the world around you. We provide comprehensive coverage of shopping destinations, excellent bars, restaurants worth every penny, picturesque photo opportunities, unforgettable experiences, and other essential details you need before booking your trip.

One of my lifelong travel goals was to visit all 50 states in the U.S., and I recently accomplished my 39th state by exploring the enchanting city of Santa Fe in New Mexico. Known as “The City Different,” Santa Fe is nestled amidst breathtaking mountain landscapes and offers a captivating blend of art, history, and nature. From its striking adobe architecture to its rich culinary traditions, Santa Fe attracts visitors from all corners of the globe. After my first visit, I knew I would return to this charming small town, where warm locals and endless cultural experiences await. If you’re seeking a place with small-town vibes, vibrant locals, and abundant cultural immersion, Santa Fe should be at the top of your travel list. To help you plan your itinerary, I have compiled a list of my favorite dishes, attractions, and highlights from this gem in the Southwest.

Where to Stay:
During my visit, I had the pleasure of staying at the Inn of the Governors—a 50-year-old hotel boasting traditional southwestern-style interiors. The decor, convenient downtown location, and the warm welcome of biscochito cookies and sherry upon arrival made my stay unforgettable. For those looking to stay outside the city center, there are also incredible hotels like El Rey Court—an 86-room adobe roadside motor court along Route 66 that has been transformed into a stylish boutique hotel perfect for a photoshoot. If you prefer luxury accommodations, consider Bishop’s Lodge or the Four Seasons Rancho Encantado.

What to Eat:
New Mexico is renowned for its love for chile peppers, evident in their official state question, “red or green?” at many restaurants. I fully indulged in the local food scene, savoring dishes with green chile sauce, red chile sauce, and even the popular “Christmas style” with both options. Some of my favorites include the enchiladas at La Plazuela, the green chile burger at Blue Heron, and the unique chile-infused treats at Kakawa Chocolate House. Make sure to try the mouthwatering offerings at El Chile Toreado, a James Beard Award semi-finalist food truck known for its breakfast tacos and burritos. For an upscale dining experience, Sazón and The Compound are excellent choices.

What to Drink:
No trip to New Mexico is complete without sipping on a refreshing margarita. Santa Fe has its own Margarita Trail that both locals and tourists can explore responsibly. During my visit, I enjoyed a spectacular margarita while admiring the sunset at The Bell Tower, a rooftop bar at La Fonda. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the green chile wine at Blue Heron. Santa Fe also boasts a vibrant coffee culture, and I highly recommend Iconik Lupe, CrashMurderBusiness, and Ohori’s for delicious coffee creations.

What to Do:
Despite its smaller population, Santa Fe offers an impressive array of exciting activities. A visit to the famous Georgia O’Keeffe Museum is a must. Plan your visit carefully, as the museum has limited seasonal hours. Next time, I plan on taking a day trip to Ghost Ranch to explore the late artist’s home and studio. Downtown Santa Fe is home to several museums, including the New Mexico History Museum, New Mexico Museum of Art, IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts, and SITE Santa Fe—an ever-changing contemporary arts space. Don’t miss out on the immersive art experience at Meow Wolf, which originated in Santa Fe in 2008. When you need some relaxation, Ojo Spa & Resort offers a tranquil retreat with beautiful thermal pools. For a unique experience, take a scenic train journey on the Sky Railway, offering stargazing trips, sunset serenades, murder mysteries, and more. If you visit during the right season, you can also enjoy skiing.

Where to Shop:
A visit to Santa Fe wouldn’t be complete without exploring the art galleries. Take a stroll down Canyon Road, a renowned street known for its art galleries that attract visitors from around the world. Kay Contemporary Art stood out for its impressive sculpture garden. If you’re looking for more affordable art and crafts, visit the artisan market at the Santa Fe Railyard. Shiprock, Santa Fe Vintage Outpost, and Design Warehouse are also great places to discover unique pieces. For a delightful shopping experience, visit Los Poblanos—a stunning boutique filled with local products and adorable home items. On my next visit, I plan on checking out their historic inn and organic farm in Albuquerque.

Prepare for your Santa Fe adventure by packing layers and considering the high elevation. Embrace Santa Fe’s rich history, world-class art scene, and exquisite cuisine as you immerse yourself in the vibrant culture of “The City Different.” Whether you’re an art enthusiast, a food lover, or simply seeking a unique vacation, Santa Fe has something to offer everyone.
