Welcome to Take A Break, your ultimate guide to planning the perfect trip for relaxation, self-discovery, and reconnecting with the world around you. We provide comprehensive information on shopping stops, top-notch bars, restaurants that are worth every penny, photo opportunities, unforgettable experiences, and other important details you need to know before booking your trip.

When it comes to picturesque vistas, delightful weather, and mouthwatering fish tacos, San Diego should definitely be at the top of your travel list in California. It’s no wonder that this SoCal destination has been featured in numerous iconic movies like “Top Gun,” “Some Like It Hot,” and “Almost Famous.” The breathtaking sunsets alone attract travelers from all over the world, but it’s the laid-back atmosphere and incredible food scene that truly make San Diego a must-visit destination. I’ve had the pleasure of visiting “America’s Finest City” multiple times, most recently for a friend’s wedding this summer. Each visit allows me to explore new restaurants and unique experiences that San Diego has to offer. Below, I’ve compiled some of my favorite dishes, attractions, and highlights from this stunning coastal gem.

Where To Stay:
On my most recent visit, I had the pleasure of staying at the Kimpton Alma Hotel, located in downtown San Diego within walking distance of numerous fantastic restaurants and bars. The hotel’s restaurant, The Desmond, was also outstanding. I highly recommend trying their seasonal dips and the incredible Brussels sprouts in dashi broth. However, my favorite part of the hotel was undoubtedly the rooftop pool, where I spent most of my time enjoying the bar and bites with a breathtaking view. After a couple of nights at the Kimpton, I relocated to Estancia La Jolla, which was chosen as the venue for my friend’s wedding. Its lush gardens, charming seating areas, top-notch spa, and pool amenities made it an unforgettable stay.

On my next trip to the San Diego area, I have my sights set on staying at the iconic Hotel del Coronado, which boasts a beachfront atmosphere and striking architecture reminiscent of a scene from a movie.

What To Eat:
While The Desmond is an exceptional restaurant, San Diego offers a plethora of culinary delights to explore. One of my favorite fine-dining experiences was at Animae, a trendy Asian fusion restaurant by the water. If you’re looking for classic waterfront views, George’s at the Cove in La Jolla is a must-visit. I’ve also had memorable meals at Callie, a Mediterranean spot in the East Village, and Pacific Coast Grill, located right on the beach in Cardiff.

But no visit to San Diego is complete without sampling the amazing taco joints scattered throughout the city. I highly recommend Tacos El Gordo, City Tacos, and Lola 55 in the downtown area, as well as Las Olas in Cardiff. Other highly recommended taco spots include Oscar’s in Bird Rock, Don Carlos in La Jolla, Rudy’s in Solana Beach, TJ Tacos in Escondido, and Juanitas in Encinitas.

If you have a sweet tooth, you can’t miss the delectable baked goods at the aptly named Extraordinary Desserts downtown. VG Donut & Bakery in Cardiff is another fantastic spot for delicious old-fashioned donuts. For a truly exceptional French toast experience, head to Brockton Villa, a historic home-turned-restaurant in La Jolla. Additionally, I’ve received rave reviews about Juniper & Ivy, Kingfisher, and Herb & Wood. And don’t forget to indulge in the perfectly fresh seafood sandwiches at El Pescador and Point Loma Seafoods. Lastly, the pasta galore in San Diego’s Little Italy neighborhood is a foodie’s paradise.

What To Drink:
If you’re looking for an exciting nightlife, the Gaslamp Quarter in downtown San Diego is the place to be. With a variety of options ranging from wine bars to dance clubs, you’ll find something to suit your taste. During my visit, my friends and I had a blast exploring different spots, but our absolute favorite was the secret underground speakeasy known as Prohibition. Not only do they serve A-plus cocktails, but the live band performing when we arrived added to its allure. Another favorite of ours was Techo Beso, a wraparound rooftop bar at the AC Hotel. Its tropical decor and lively DJ had everyone dancing. Mothership is a great choice for innovative cocktails, while the Kraken offers a vibrant dive bar experience.

What To Do:
San Diego has so much to offer that it’s difficult to experience it all in one trip. However, I always try to make the most of my time there. Balboa Park, famous for its beauty, is a perfect place for a leisurely stroll. Don’t forget to visit the massive San Diego Zoo, where you can observe thousands of animals from various species.

If you prefer to stay in the downtown area, a visit to the USS Midway Museum or catching a Padres game at Petco Park are highly recommended. La Jolla Cove is another must-visit destination, where you can see seals and sea lions lounging on the rocks and sandy beaches (just remember to keep a safe distance!).

For outdoor enthusiasts, a hike at Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve provides breathtaking views of the ocean. You can also watch hang gliders launch from the Torrey Pines Gliderport or indulge in a round of golf at the famous Torrey Pines Golf Course.

Hiking enthusiasts might want to check out the trails leading to the social media-famous Potato Chip Rock outside the city. And don’t miss the opportunity to witness some of the most stunning sunsets you’ll ever see. Although photos can’t do justice to the magic of these sunsets, the memories will stay with you forever. Powerhouse Park in Del Mar offers breathtaking sunset views, and Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach, Scripps Memorial Pier in La Jolla, and Sunset Cliffs are also recommended spots.

During your visit to SoCal, please keep safety in mind, particularly when enjoying the beach. Respect the rules and be considerate to the locals. San Diego has a laid-back vibe, so try to align your energy with that and simply relax and enjoy the stunning views.
