The Suspected Murderer of Mother and Grandfather Has Passed Away

A Vermont man, aged 29, has tragically passed away in prison while awaiting trial for the highly publicized death of his mother. The lifeless body of Nathan Carman was discovered in his cell at a federal prison in Keene, New Hampshire, according to a report by WMUR. The cause of his death has not been disclosed and Carman was alone at the time. He was facing allegations of killing his mother, Linda Carman, and his grandfather, John Chakalos, in an elaborate scheme to acquire insurance and inheritance money, as reported by CNN. However, the pending trial was exclusively related to his mother’s death in 2016.

Prosecutors claimed that Carman organized a fishing trip with Linda Carman off the coast of New England and proceeded to kill her at sea. Nonetheless, charges for her murder were not brought against him until last year. Eight days after setting out, Carman was found drifting in a life raft, as noted by CNN, but the body of his mother was never recovered. Authorities also accused Carman of fatally shooting his affluent grandfather in 2013, yet he had not faced charges in relation to that case.

One of Carman’s attorneys informed the AP that their client seemed to be in “good spirits” during a conversation on Wednesday. Martin Minnella stated, “We were prepared to start picking a jury on Oct. 10, and we were confident we were going to win. It’s just a tragedy, a tragedy.” Carman’s three aunts, who are the surviving daughters of Chakalos, requested privacy “while we process this shocking news and its impact on the tragic events surrounding the last several years.” (Read more Vermont stories.)
