Suzanne Shepherd, a beloved actor recognized for her memorable roles in iconic films and television shows, passed away at her New York City home at the age of 89, as confirmed by her agent to Variety.
Shepherd was widely known for her portrayal of Mary DeAngelis, the mother of Carmela Soprano (Edie Falco) in HBO’s renowned crime drama series “The Sopranos,” as well as her role as the mother of Lorraine Bracco’s character Karen Hill in the classic film “Goodfellas.” Additionally, Shepherd graced the big screen in various films including “Jacob’s Ladder” (1990), “Lolita” (1997), and “Requiem for a Dream” (2000), among others.
Born on Oct. 31, 1934, Shepherd made her debut in the 1988 romcom “Mystic Pizza” before starring in films such as “Working Girl,” “Uncle Buck,” and “Second Sight,” leading up to her memorable performance in Martin Scorsese’s “Goodfellas.”
On the television side, Shepherd guest-starred in popular shows like “Law & Order,” “Blue Bloods,” and “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.”
As news of her passing spread, fellow “Sopranos” actor Ray Abruzzo paid tribute to Shepherd on Instagram, reminiscing about her incredible talent and impact.
In addition to her acting career, Shepherd left a lasting impression as a theater director and acting coach, influencing and mentoring countless individuals over her four-decade career. A forthcoming documentary, “A Gift of Fire,” will celebrate her remarkable journey as an esteemed acting teacher.
Suzanne Shepherd is survived by her daughter Kate Shepherd, son-in-law Miles McManus, and granddaughter Isabelle Shepherd.
