Sean and Leigh Anne Tuohy respond to Michael Oher’s lawsuit, denying any intent to adopt him and expressing their willingness to end his conservatorship.
In their legal filing with the Shelby County Probate Court, the Tuohys state that they never promised Oher he would be adopted. While they occasionally referred to him as “son,” it was always in a colloquial sense. They argue that this term did not cause any harm to Oher, as he claims in his lawsuit.
Oher, whose story inspired The Blind Side, accuses the Tuohys of using a conservatorship to control his finances for their own gain. He believes they have made millions from his name and story since the release of the movie in 2009. Oher has never been supportive of the film based on his life.
The Tuohys request the dismissal of Oher’s request for financial compensation and deny ever entering into a contract with 20th Century Fox or others regarding The Blind Side. They claim that Michael Lewis, the author of the book, made those arrangements.
The payment from the film was divided among the Tuohys, Oher, and their two biological children. They state that Oher received less than $225,000 from the movie.
Regarding Oher’s claim that he was unaware of the conservatorship until February 2023, the Tuohys point to his own memoir as evidence. In the book, Oher described them as his legal conservators.
Oher also demanded a full accounting of the money earned from his name and story. The Tuohys admit they have never provided him with such an accounting.
The Tuohys admit to establishing the conservatorship when Oher turned 18 to help him with health insurance, a driver’s license, and college admission. They argue that the conservatorship allowed Oher to bypass NCAA rules that could have hindered his football career at the University of Mississippi.
Oher previously accused the Tuohys of exploiting his talent for their own benefit. He alleged that they attempted to extort $15 million from him and threatened to plant negative stories about him in the press.
Oher’s memoir, titled When Your Back’s Against the Wall: Fame, Football, and Lessons Learned through a Lifetime of Adversity, was released last month. He played eight seasons in the NFL and won a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens before retiring.
