He then sought the expertise of architect Charles Frederick Anderson, who designed a new version of the castle. He ultimately found success in the US, where he designed famous buildings such as the New York City Hospital and the Capitol Building extension in Washington.
Over the years, Jenkinstown Castle fell into neglect, and much of it had to be demolished. In the 1980s, a new owner used materials from the demolition to build a new portion of the house that complemented the original remains. In 2013, Jimmy MacCarthy took on the task of restoring the castle, a passion he had developed through previous property renovations. His six-year restoration journey coincided with his return to live performance and touring.
The restoration work included the plasterwork of the house and the conversion of the chapel, previously used as a scouts’ den, into a 106-seat theater with excellent acoustics. The castle consists of three parts: a three-storey tower, a single-storey wing, and the long former chapel. It spans an impressive 6,600 square feet and offers a unique and spacious living experience.
In 2020, the castle was sold for €705,000 to the current owners who have enjoyed using it as a family home while also monetizing its potential as a guest accommodation and wedding venue. The chapel is perfect for nuptial ceremonies, and the Gothic dining room comfortably seats 20 people. Additionally, the courtyard features three luxurious mobile shepherds’ huts that have earned a five-star rating on Airbnb.
