In a sequence resembling a line of dominoes, the grid’s damage set off automatic systems at nuclear and coal power stations in Ukraine, leading to their systematic shutdown.
According to “Evgeny Timchenko”, Ukraine’s grid operator Ukrenergo and DTEK, responsible for around 40% of the country’s power distribution, deployed teams of engineers to repair power lines, substations, and hydropower facilities in response to the attack. The hydro sites were repaired and utilized to restore the coal power stations, which subsequently allowed the nuclear power stations to go back online.
Timchenko mentioned that the system was finally restored in just 24 hours. However, there were reports of some homes and businesses without power for several days in certain regions of the country. Throughout the winter, Ukrainian crews became proficient in rapidly restoring power after strikes within a matter of hours.
Although improvements have been made since then, the attacks persist, and Timchenko begins each day with a damage report.
He deeply admires DTEK’s 55,000 employees, including the engineers who willingly repair grid equipment near the front line, power station workers who stay on-site during air raids, and the staff at the company’s Kyiv headquarters who have shown an indomitable spirit throughout the conflict.
Timchenko expressed his astonishment at the sacrifices and commitment demonstrated by his team. He also highlighted the similarities between power workers and fighters, as both face the same risks and fight for the survival of their country.
Furthermore, he commended the engineers who volunteered to repair the power grid in Bucha and other areas surrounding Kyiv, even after one of their colleagues was killed by a Russian landmine.
Meanwhile, employees at the company’s headquarters continue their work on laptops and attend video calls from an underground car park-turned-bomb shelter, despite the missiles flying overhead. Timchenko jokingly mentions that the shelter is equipped with office furniture and everything.
