The Queen lends Princess Beatrice and Edoardo a second-hand gown for their budget wedding

Princess Beatrice and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi were among the many young couples whose wedding plans were disrupted by Covid-19 in 2020. Rather than postponing their wedding to the following year, they opted for a more intimate ceremony just a few weeks later. Originally planned for May 29th, the wedding took place on July 17th with only close family in attendance. They exchanged the prestigious Chapel Royal at St. James’s Palace for the Royal Chapel of All Saints, located on the grounds of their childhood family home, the Royal Lodge in Windsor Great Park.

In a socially distanced ceremony attended by their immediate family, including Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, the couple tied the knot. Princess Beatrice wore a vintage dress by Norman Hartnell, borrowed from her late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II. The dress, previously worn by the Queen at a state dinner in Rome in 1961, was made of Peau De Soie taffeta in shades of ivory. It featured puffed organza sleeves, specially added for Beatrice, and intricate diamante embellishment on the bodice. The dress had been reworked by the Queen’s dresser, Angela Kelly, and royal dress designer Stewart Parvin. Beatrice completed her ensemble with the Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, originally worn by Queen Elizabeth on her wedding day in 1947. She also wore champagne satin Valentino heels, previously worn at Charles and Camilla’s wedding in 2011.

The ceremony took place at the Royal Chapel of All Saints, which was decorated with pink and white delphiniums, roses, waxflower, and hydrangeas from Windsor Great Park. Beatrice carried a bouquet of various flowers, including trailing jasmine, sweet peas, roses, waxflowers, and astilbe flowers, along with sprigs of myrtle. Continuing the tradition of royal brides, Beatrice sent her wedding bouquet to be placed on the tomb of the Unknown Warrior in Westminster Abbey.

During the half-hour service, Sarah Ferguson and Nikki Williams-Ellis, the mothers of the bride and groom, respectively, read the couple’s favorite poems. Edoardo’s three-year-old son, Wolfie, played the roles of best man and pageboy. While Prince Andrew escorted Beatrice down the aisle, he did not appear in any of the publicly shared photographs.

In comparison to her sister Eugenie’s lavish ceremony in 2018, Princess Beatrice’s wedding was a more low-key affair. While the exact cost of the wedding is unknown, it is believed that taxpayers did not bear the expenses. Typically, British taxpayer money covers security costs for royal weddings, while the palace takes care of the private aspects of the day. Eugenie’s wedding, which included a carriage ride around Windsor, reportedly cost around £2 million.
